Workshop sponsored by the National Nanotechnology Initiative and the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute

What: A two-day workshop hosted by the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) and the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) to assess the current landscape of regional, state, and local (RSL) nanotechnology initiatives.

When: May 1-2, 2012, with optional site visits on April 30

Where: Portland, Oregon at the Embassy SuitesDowntown, located at 319 SW Pine Street, Portland, OR

Who: Leaders of regional, state, and local organizations and the Federal government; economic development groups; investors and entrepreneurs; technology leaders; and scientists and engineers from industry, business, government, academia, and the general public.

Why: To interface with regional, state, and local bodies as the NNI enters its second decade, with a focus on economic growth and job creation, and the tech transfer and commercialization of nanotechnology potential applications.

How: The workshop will examine:

  • the current landscape of U.S. RSL nanotechnology initiatives and their status;
  • current Federal resources available for RSLs;
  • RSL best practices, business models, and opportunities for partnering; and
  • the role of nanotechnology RSLs in future U.S. economic growth and job creation.

Confirmed speakers include Dr. Clayton Teague, former NNCO Director; Don Kania, President and CEO of FEI; Ted Wheeler, Oregon State Treasurer; Tim Harper, Technology Entrepreneur and Owner of Cientifica; Mark Skinner, Vice President of State Science and Technology Institute (SSTI); Vincent Caprio, Executive Director of the NanoBusiness Commercialization Assocation; Travis Earles, Senior Manager of Advanced Materials & Nanotechnology Initiatives at Lockheed Martin; Mary Jo Waits, Director of Economic, Human Services & Workforce Division at the National Governors Association; and Jim Mason, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative.
