Clayton Osbon, who was charged Wednesday with interfering with a flight crew, a felony, reportedly ran up and down the aisle of the plane shouting about Al Qaeda and declaring the plane was going down, even as passengers struggled to restrain him.
The co-pilot landed the Las Vegas-bound flight safely in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Osbon was taken, strapped to a stretcher, to a local medical facility and later charged.
Yet the 12-year JetBlue captain had been, prior to this episode, a man whom the company's CEO called a ?consummate professional,? rising within JetBlue's ranks to become an exemplary "flight standards captain." Osbon has been reported by news outlets to have been an even-tempered man on good terms with his neighbors and hobby pilot buddies in his hometown of Richmond Hill, Ga.

Experts unconnected with the investigation say several pharmacological issues under scrutiny within the airline industry are likely to get attention in the Osbon case, including the side effects of medicines that pilots sometimes use to fight fatigue and depression.

Use of antidepressants had long been considered cause for grounding a commercial pilot. That changed in April 2010, when the FAA announced it would begin to issue medical certificates, or waivers, on a case-by-case basis to "pilots taking medication for mild to moderate depression." Now, pilots taking Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, or Lexapro under doctors? orders are allowed to fly if they have had successful treatment for 12 months.
"He might have a psychosis or some other underlying illness," says Russell Rayman, a board-certified specialist in aerospace medicine and a former director of the Aerospace Medical Association in Alexandria, Va., an organization of physicians and scientists that conducts research on medicine and the aerospace industry.
"But there's also the possibility that [Osbon] had a reaction to some medication he was taking as a prescription ? or even something he just bought in the drugstore," Dr. Rayman speculates. "All three possibilities have to be investigated. Certainly some medications could trigger a bizarre reaction."
The FAA requires pilots under age 40 to receive physical examinations once a year. Pilots 40 and over must have exams twice a year. As part of the checkup, they must submit all medications they are taking or that have been prescribed by doctors.
Medications related to sleeping problems could have been an issue in this case, some aerospace medical experts say. Osbon typically flew jets out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. He roomed with several other pilots in a small apartment, according to news reports. With fragmented, often-changing schedules, many pilots develop problems sleeping.
Half of all airline pilots "rarely or never get a good night's sleep on work nights," according to a survey released earlier this month by the National Sleep Foundation, an Arlington, Va., organization of health professionals who study the issue.
Last year, the National Transportation Safety Board, responding to a fatal 2008 charter-jet crash in Minnesota, called for changes in rules dealing with how airline pilots deal with fatigue. Failure of pilots to get a good night's rest, undiagnosed sleep disorders, and unauthorized sleep medications were cited in the case.
If a pilot is prescribed a sleeping medication for regular use, it?s possible the FAA might not recertify him to fly at his next physical exam, some medical experts note.
Medications "for sleep ? they all have psychiatric overhangs," says one senior medical expert with knowledge of federal aviation requirements who requested anonymity. "The FAA won't permit the use of sleep medications because the parade of sleepwalking and crazy things happening the next day is just unbelievable."
Instead, the expert says, the agency has tried to address this by changing the work rules. In 2014, the FAA will require 10 hours of rest (up from eight hours currently) between flight duties, with at least eight hours of sleep.
Another problem is that pilots sometimes "self-medicate" to sleep better, some say. And they may not report that.
"I don't think we really know to what extent pilots are self-medicating for sleep problems because of ?the fear of FAA regulations prohibiting sleep medications," says Sanjay Patel, a specialist in sleep medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and a researcher at Harvard Medical School. "If anything, pilots are more likely to be undertreating insomnia for fear of the FAA restrictions."
Dr. Patel adds, ?It would be very rare for something like [the Osbon case] to happen [because of reactions to sleep medications], but you can't completely rule it out without looking for evidence of drug in the person's system."
Finally, there is the question of nutritional supplements. According to his Twitter account, Osbon, in his spare time, was moonlighting as a "regional director" to help market a nutritional supplement aimed at weight loss. Could he have been affected by it?
"There's so much we just don't know," Rayman says. "People walk into a drugstore and buy what they want ? they're self-medicating. Any of those medications could trigger a bizarre reaction in conflict with one another. And we don't know what kind of dietary supplements he was using, if any. It's something that needs to be checked."
Welcome back to me, as I have not posted in a while now. The market for coastal and waterfront homeowners insurance on Long Island and in the New York - New Jersey - Connecticut area in general has, if anything, gotten a little better in the last year or so, with a few more carriers coming in to the market, and some companies at least NOT canceling as many people as they were 3 and 4 years ago. In addition, prices for insurance with the 'excess lines' markets such as Lloyds of London, Scottsdale, and many others, have been driven down by competition. This is/was especially true in the past several years where we have not had major storm activity.
But in the most recent six months, there has been a 'firming' of prices and some tightening of underwriting coming from these excess insurance carriers who are the ones taking the risk on houses closest to the shore. The question becomes, why? There are several reasons at play.
For one thing, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that in ANY type of insurance, but especially a line like home/fire insurance where there is a potential for catastrophic losses, rates can only go down so far before they 'bounce along the bottom'. That's the price at which companies start to notice that their profit margin is being squeezed. Insurance companies, if run properly, can make money, but it comes from relatively very small percentage profits on huge dollars. So when you are working on a 5% margin, or even less, it doesn't take much to turn your results from black ink to red.
The next thing that's having an effect on all insurance company profitability is the low interest rate environment. When the insurance company is able to get a decent income on their holdings, competition can force them to lower or hold the line on rates they charge to customers. But since most insurance companies invest mostly in interest bearing bonds, and we know what rates are available on those, their investment income has dropped substantially in the past few years.
Finally, the string of catastrophes in other parts of the world has an effect on the reinsurance market, which is where insurance companies buy insurance for themselves against the major catastrophes. That spreads the risk out all over the world, but unfortunately we have seen more and more events like tornadoes, tsunami's, massive flooding, and other things that, even though they might not happen here, still affect rates for property with a high catastrophe risk.

I was just on Linkedin reading through discussions. As always, there are a lot of conversations about how to write the perfect resume, how to conduct yourself during the interview, how to dress for an interview, etc. These articles are very informative and the advice makes sense... But, (yes, there is a but) there is one secret key to success that is rarely mentioned.
If you include this secret all the rest will fall in place. If you include this secret you WILL write the perfect resume, you WILL be confident and act appropriately in the interview, and you WILL dress for success. Further, your chances of getting the job increase exponentially. In the long term, you will have job satisfaction, job security, and work-life balance.
Now you are probably thinking, ?what?s she selling?? I am selling simple, plain-old common sense. It cost you a little bit of time and effort but ultimately, the return on investment is massive. It will benefit you as an employee and it will benefit the employer to whom you dedicate your career. So, are you ready for the secret?
The secret is a question you must ask yourself before applying for a job. After you have asked yourself this question, we will need to put a little effort into answering it. DO NOT jump to conclusions answering the question without due diligence. Most importantly, DO NOT apply for a job without answering the question first. Ok? without further ado, here is the question?. Do you want the job??That seems pretty obvious, right? Well, it?s not.
Let?s think about the word ?want?. Many make the mistake of mixing up ?want? with ?need?. You ?need? a job; therefore, in desperation you apply to anything and everything never considering what you really want or whether you really fit. So you get a job and you fulfilled the need, but it really wasn?t what you wanted. You are miserable and unmotivated. The dissatisfaction and lack of fulfillment makes you resent your job, your managers, and your coworkers.? Perhaps your performance is adequate? but don?t shine. Who is benefitting? If you are only adequate, what job security do you have? If you are miserable, do you really have work-life balance?
So, how do you know what you want? How do you find what you want? Lastly, how do you get what you want? Let?s start with the first question ? What do you want? The answer to this is all about your personality type. Are you a creative or analytical? Are you a team player or do you fly solo? Are you competitive or not? Do you prefer privacy or wide-open workspaces? Are you outgoing or introverted? Are you one who prefers sameness or do you thrive on change? Be truthful, there are no right or wrong answers. Keep asking yourself questions until you know your personality ? until you know what you want.
To give you a good understanding of how this works, I will tell you about my wants. I want a job where I can be creative and analytical at the same time. I prefer wide-open workspaces where I can work with a team to produce amazing things. I compete against myself and therefore embrace change with the goal of constant improvement. Perhaps your is the exact opposite and that?s great too. It is all about finding what YOU want and matching it to what a company wants.
Now, on to the next question: How do you find what you want? Did you know that businesses have personalities too? In fancy terms, it is called the corporate culture. Finding the perfect job is like finding someone to marry. While you are dating (looking for a job/interviewing) you are looking for someone who shares your core values and someone who has a personality (corporate culture) complementary to yours. Notice here, I said complementary not the same. Remember, sometimes opposites attract. For example, introverts often work very well with extroverts? somebody has to do all the talking :). Creative people can open new doors for those who are super-analytic and the super-analytic can add direction the creative person?s ideas.
When you are looking for a job, do your research! Get to know the company the same way as you would a date. Learn about their core values and find out whether you and the company have complementary ?personalities?. ?There are a ton of company personality indicators if you just look. First, start by reading the job description. This is not a passive, quick review?really read it. What type of language do they use? Does it have a lot of business jargon, is it hi-tech , is it youthful? What are the requirements and the ?preferred experience? for the job? This is important, but not only to determine if you have those skills/traits/education (obviously), but also the requirements of the job tell you what the company values. Is a bachelors degree required and an MBA preferred? Clearly they value education. Do you value formal education or do you value the school of hard knocks?
Next, look thoroughly read the company?s website for clues. What are their mission, core values, long-term goals? How do they describe themselves on the career page? What benefits do they offer? Again, there is more to this than the obvious. Benefits show you what they value most.? Check out recent press releases to understand how the company works toward their goals. Look at their advertising to understand the brand image. Look the company up on websites like Glassdoor to see what employees say about the company (Remember though, you must take everything employees say with a grain of salt. Some people have axes to grind. Look for trends rather than specific complaints).?
Now that you have gotten to know the company, would you 'marry' them? (Remember you will spend as much time at work as you do at home - so isn't a job like a marriage). Does your personality complement their personality? If the answer is no ? move on. If the answer is yes, apply for the job.
The best part of all this corporate personality research is that you have now learned how to write your resume and cover letter to really grab their attention. Make sure your resume and cover letter are truthful and tailored show how you are a perfect fit for their culture. In the cover letter, take the opportunity to tell them about the personality similarities and use your prior successes to support that idea. Yes, this means you may have to rewrite your resume/cover letter for each job to which you apply? but if you really want something ? you are willing work for it, right? I don?t know about you, but my successes?weren't?handed to me on a silver platter.
When it finally comes to the interview, ask questions about the corporate personality. Get to know the employer more intimately. Interviewing should be a two way street. In the best situation, the employer interviews you and you interview the employer. Don?t be arrogant about it, but there is no harm in getting to know someone. Best of all, it shows that you are genuinely interested, that you researched, and that you want to make sure that you will be perfect for the company. No one wins if you don?t love your job. Perks, benefits, and corner office may sound great but they are not necessarily fulfilling.
The upshot? stop acting desperate and stop being lazy. Sending the same resume to hundreds of jobs that don?t fit (personality or experience for that matter) ? is just plain-old lazy. If you want a job, really want a job ?? work for it!

Needed to surmount sustainability hurdles: New yardstick of national progress; reforms of corporate reporting; an overhaul of environmental institutions
Brazil and India pay a high price for rapid economic growth, according to experts speaking at a major international meeting in London, Planet Under Pressure.
Between 1990 and 2008, the wealth of these two countries as measured by GDP per capita rose 34% and 120% respectively. But a myopic focus on economic capital is flawed, scientists and economists at the conference argue. Natural capital, the sum of a country's assets, from forests to fossil fuels and minerals, declined 46% in Brazil and 31% in India, according to a new "Inclusive Wealth Indicator" designed to augment GDP as a measure of economic progress.
When measures of natural, human and manufactured capital are considered together to obtain a more comprehensive value, Brazil's "Inclusive Wealth" rose just 3% and India's rose 9% over that time.
"The work on Brazil and India illustrates why Gross Domestic Product is inadequate and misleading as an index of economic progress from a long-term perspective," says Professor Anantha Duraiappah, Executive Director of UNU-IHDP.
"A country could completely exhaust all its natural resources while posting positive GDP growth. We need an indicator that estimates the wealth of nations natural, human and manufactured and ideally even the social and ecological constituents of human well-being."
The first Inclusive Wealth Report, to debut in full at a joint UNU-IHDP and United Nations Environment Programme event at June's UN "Rio+20" summit in Brazil, will describe the "inclusive wealth" of 20 nations: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Norway, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, USA, United Kingdom and Venezuela. The 20 nations featured in the report represent 72% of world GDP and 56% of global population.
Authored by 17 specialists from the UK, USA, Chile, Malaysia, India, Germany and Australia, the Inclusive Wealth Indicator is undertaken by UNU-IHDP with UNEP support and in collaboration with the UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC) and the Natural Capital Project of Stanford University.
"Our goal is to provide national governments with a bi-annual report to assess transition to the so-called green economy, to create productive and sustainable economic bases for the future," says Duraiappah.
Says Dr. Pablo Muoz of UNU-IHDP, the report's Scientific Director: "Until the yardsticks which society uses to evaluate progress are changed to capture elements of long-term sustainability, the planet and its people will continue to suffer under the weight of short-term growth policies."
Yvo de Boer, former head of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and now Special Global Advisor to KPMG, has a similar message for businesses, calling on them to measure and report on sustainability in their corporate practices.
He notes a growing trend within commerce of companies "building frameworks for sustainability reporting processes, stronger information systems and appropriate governance and control mechanisms on a par with those currently used in financial reporting."
Unprecedented natural resource scarcity, rising food prices, energy security issues and population growth of up to 10 billion by 2100, means "the private sector is ever more challenged to overhaul its strategy and make its business models future proof."
"First and foremost," he says, "businesses need to fully assess and understand future sustainability risks ... define their responses to deal with them, and analyze opportunities for efficiency, substitution or adaptation."
At present, he notes, "if companies had to pay for the full environmental costs of their activities, they would have lost 41 cents out of every (US) $1 earned in 2010. The external environmental costs of 11 key industry sectors rose by almost 50 percent between 2002 and 2010, from $566 billion to $854 billion."
"It is clearly no longer the question if we must transcend to a more sustainable economy. The question is the pace at which we are able, and especially willing, to achieve it."
Meanwhile, leading experts in the issue call for fundamental reforms of global environmental governance and a "constitutional moment" comparable in scale and importance to the reform of international governance that followed World War II.
"Stark increases in natural disasters, food and water security problems and biodiversity loss are just part of the evidence that humanity may be crossing planetary boundaries and approaching dangerous tipping points," says Prof. Frank Biermann of VU University, Amsterdam, director of the Earth System Governance research alliance.
Among specific measures called for by Biermann and colleagues:
Creation of a UN Sustainable Development Council to better integrate sustainable development concerns across the UN system, with a strong role for the world's 20 largest economies (G20).
Upgrading the UN Environment Programme to a full-fledged UN agency a step that would give it greater authority, more secure funding, and facilitate the creation and enforcement of international regulations and standards.
Stronger reliance on qualified majority-voting to speed decision-making in international negotiations;
Increased financial support for poorer nations, including through novel financial mechanisms such as air transportation levies.
Says Biermann: "Incremental change is no longer sufficient to bring about societal change at the level and with the speed needed to stop earth system transformation. Structural change in global governance is needed, both inside and outside the UN system and involving both public and private actors"
At the London conference, 2,800 experts spanning the spectrum of interconnected scientific interests, policymakers and business representatives are examining the planet's vital signs, potential solutions, hurdles and ways to break down the barriers to progress. The conference is the largest gathering of experts in global sustainability in advance of "Rio+20" and the largest gathering ever of such a group of experts.
It concludes tomorrow with the presentation of the final conference statement.

Needed to surmount sustainability hurdles: New yardstick of national progress; reforms of corporate reporting; an overhaul of environmental institutions
Brazil and India pay a high price for rapid economic growth, according to experts speaking at a major international meeting in London, Planet Under Pressure.
Between 1990 and 2008, the wealth of these two countries as measured by GDP per capita rose 34% and 120% respectively. But a myopic focus on economic capital is flawed, scientists and economists at the conference argue. Natural capital, the sum of a country's assets, from forests to fossil fuels and minerals, declined 46% in Brazil and 31% in India, according to a new "Inclusive Wealth Indicator" designed to augment GDP as a measure of economic progress.
When measures of natural, human and manufactured capital are considered together to obtain a more comprehensive value, Brazil's "Inclusive Wealth" rose just 3% and India's rose 9% over that time.
"The work on Brazil and India illustrates why Gross Domestic Product is inadequate and misleading as an index of economic progress from a long-term perspective," says Professor Anantha Duraiappah, Executive Director of UNU-IHDP.
"A country could completely exhaust all its natural resources while posting positive GDP growth. We need an indicator that estimates the wealth of nations natural, human and manufactured and ideally even the social and ecological constituents of human well-being."
The first Inclusive Wealth Report, to debut in full at a joint UNU-IHDP and United Nations Environment Programme event at June's UN "Rio+20" summit in Brazil, will describe the "inclusive wealth" of 20 nations: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Norway, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, USA, United Kingdom and Venezuela. The 20 nations featured in the report represent 72% of world GDP and 56% of global population.
Authored by 17 specialists from the UK, USA, Chile, Malaysia, India, Germany and Australia, the Inclusive Wealth Indicator is undertaken by UNU-IHDP with UNEP support and in collaboration with the UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC) and the Natural Capital Project of Stanford University.
"Our goal is to provide national governments with a bi-annual report to assess transition to the so-called green economy, to create productive and sustainable economic bases for the future," says Duraiappah.
Says Dr. Pablo Muoz of UNU-IHDP, the report's Scientific Director: "Until the yardsticks which society uses to evaluate progress are changed to capture elements of long-term sustainability, the planet and its people will continue to suffer under the weight of short-term growth policies."
Yvo de Boer, former head of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and now Special Global Advisor to KPMG, has a similar message for businesses, calling on them to measure and report on sustainability in their corporate practices.
He notes a growing trend within commerce of companies "building frameworks for sustainability reporting processes, stronger information systems and appropriate governance and control mechanisms on a par with those currently used in financial reporting."
Unprecedented natural resource scarcity, rising food prices, energy security issues and population growth of up to 10 billion by 2100, means "the private sector is ever more challenged to overhaul its strategy and make its business models future proof."
"First and foremost," he says, "businesses need to fully assess and understand future sustainability risks ... define their responses to deal with them, and analyze opportunities for efficiency, substitution or adaptation."
At present, he notes, "if companies had to pay for the full environmental costs of their activities, they would have lost 41 cents out of every (US) $1 earned in 2010. The external environmental costs of 11 key industry sectors rose by almost 50 percent between 2002 and 2010, from $566 billion to $854 billion."
"It is clearly no longer the question if we must transcend to a more sustainable economy. The question is the pace at which we are able, and especially willing, to achieve it."
Meanwhile, leading experts in the issue call for fundamental reforms of global environmental governance and a "constitutional moment" comparable in scale and importance to the reform of international governance that followed World War II.
"Stark increases in natural disasters, food and water security problems and biodiversity loss are just part of the evidence that humanity may be crossing planetary boundaries and approaching dangerous tipping points," says Prof. Frank Biermann of VU University, Amsterdam, director of the Earth System Governance research alliance.
Among specific measures called for by Biermann and colleagues:
Creation of a UN Sustainable Development Council to better integrate sustainable development concerns across the UN system, with a strong role for the world's 20 largest economies (G20).
Upgrading the UN Environment Programme to a full-fledged UN agency a step that would give it greater authority, more secure funding, and facilitate the creation and enforcement of international regulations and standards.
Stronger reliance on qualified majority-voting to speed decision-making in international negotiations;
Increased financial support for poorer nations, including through novel financial mechanisms such as air transportation levies.
Says Biermann: "Incremental change is no longer sufficient to bring about societal change at the level and with the speed needed to stop earth system transformation. Structural change in global governance is needed, both inside and outside the UN system and involving both public and private actors"
At the London conference, 2,800 experts spanning the spectrum of interconnected scientific interests, policymakers and business representatives are examining the planet's vital signs, potential solutions, hurdles and ways to break down the barriers to progress. The conference is the largest gathering of experts in global sustainability in advance of "Rio+20" and the largest gathering ever of such a group of experts.
It concludes tomorrow with the presentation of the final conference statement.

Pope Benedict XVI lands in Cuba today, 14 years after the first papal visit to the island. In the years that have passed since Pope John Paul II promised to open the last bastion of communism in the Americas to Catholicism and the world, Cuba has started slowly down a path toward reform.

As the regime gradually warms to religious institutions, Cuban dissidents are hoping this week's papal visit will amplify their voices, long repressed by authorities here. The pope offered them some hope while visiting Mexico last weekend. Yesterday, he entertained several hundred thousand people at an open-air mass in a park outside Silao, Mexico.
"Today it is evident that Marxist ideology in the way it was conceived no longer corresponds to reality," he said, adding that the Catholic Church was ready to help Cuba find new ways of moving forward ?without trauma."
It is a long road to democracy and freedom of religion, however. After the 1959 Revolution, the Cuban government expelled priests and nuns, and seized Church property. Believers were banned from the Communist Party, and Cuba became, according to Fidel Castro, an atheist state.?But the Catholic Church has proven its ability to push reform in the past. Christmas was once again celebrated as a national holiday just in time for John Paul II's visit in 1998. And the Church has found a more prominent role, led by Cardinal Jaime Ortega, under Raul Castro who has ruled since 2008.
Cuban dissident Oswaldo Pay?, sitting in his bare living room in a poor neighborhood of Havana, says he?s grateful for the pope?s pledge to help Cuba move forward.
"We have faith but we know that this change depends on?us Cubans," says Mr. Pay?, the 2005 nominee for the Nobel Prize and the country's foremost opposition figure.?"Our hope for the [pope?s visit] isn't a political change but we want a voice."
The opposition group?Las Damas de Blanco, or the Ladies in White, agrees. These women are largely the wives and family members of dissidents arrested in the wake of the Black Spring of 2003, when 75 dissidents, including many journalists, were arrested by Cuban authorities. Every Sunday, the Ladies protest and march through Havana, however last weekend more than 70 were arrested, and released just hours later.
One aspect of incarceration that couldn?t be guessed is the degree to which our physical absence disrupts our interpersonal relationships. Prior to entering the prison system, I had a robust social network. I knew a lot of people and I spent a lot of time hanging out with friends, going to parties and getting involved in activities that most young people experience. At the time, I believed my relationships were stable and that somehow we?d always be connected. I thought I had a lot of real friends and people I could count on no matter what, but today I know differently.
Remember the phrase, ?Outta sight, outta mind?? It alludes to the idea that once visual/physical contact is broken, the relationship itself is broken. This is precisely what many of us in prison experience during our incarceration. Of course, this ?outta sight, outta mind? dynamic is not unique to prison, but there?s something about experiencing it while incarcerated that makes its impact so much more dramatic.
In my case, it felt that as my relationships deteriorated, so did my capacity to have meaning in the outside world. I felt as though my friendships helped me maintain a sense of relevancy in life and, as a result, I found myself trying desperately to hold onto friends and things we had in common. However, as my sentence progressed, so did the distance between the friends I once cherished and me. Slowly but surely my physical absence whittled away at my relationships until my once vibrant social network was reduced to me, myself, and I. For years, I put on a front like I wasn?t affected by what was happening, but inside I agonized over the loss of my friends. I ended up feeling disconnected, like I no longer mattered to anyone in the outside world.
Today, after 18 years in prison, I have no contact with any of the people I called friends when I began my incarceration; they?ve all moved on with their lives and so have I. The only relationships I have strong enough to endure the ?outta sight, outta mind? dynamic are the relationships with my family. For this I am truly grateful because I don?t know where I?d be without the unconditional love and support of my family.
I think the toughest part of all is that I have a life sentence and I don?t know if/when I?ll ever have the opportunity to develop a friendship, romance or any other meaningful relationship outside of prison again. Pretty much everyone I know or could come close to knowing is in prison. Couple this with all the uncertainty of prison life and the mistrust associated with prison culture, I?ve found it virtually impossible to really get to know anyone in here well enough to call them a ?friend.? For me, true friendship in prison has been a fleeting illusion to be pursued but yet to be attained. Perhaps one day that will change but as it stands, I guess you could say I?m a loner just doing my best, where I am, with what I have despite being ?outta sight, and outta mind?.

An Etch-A-Sketch, for those of you under twenty, is a thick flat gray screen that comes in a plastic frame with two knobs on the front in the lower corners ? one left, one right. When Mitt ran for governor of Massachusetts he twisted the left knob, moving horizontally to the left. (I know first hand because I ran in the Democratic primary that year.) He became a social liberal, tolerant of abortion and willing to entertain the idea that gays and lesbians should be able to form civil unions. He was also an economic moderate interested in seeking ways to expand health-care coverage.
But ever since Mitt left the governor?s office, he?s been twisting the right nob, moving downward into the muck of regressive Republicanism in pursuit of the Republican nomination.
Etch-A-Sketch was introduced in 1959 near the peak of the baby boom. (It was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998, and in 2003 the Toy Industry Association named it one of the hundred most memorable toys of the twentieth century.)
But Etch-A-Sketch has been replaced by digital toys that have the capacity to play and replay videos. These new video toys aren?t just for kids. Almost every voting adult has one, or has easy access to one.
Get it??It?won?t be nearly as easy for Mitt to ?shake it up and start all over again? for the general election of 2012, should he get the nomination. Try as he might, Romney won?t be able to twist the knobs and create a brand new picture.
There will be too many videos of him during the primary saying things that were designed to appeal to increasingly far-right, far-out GOP primary voters ? but will strike most Americans as bizarre if not despicable.
America has always been the kind of place where people can reinvent themselves, escaping from their pasts by turning the knobs on their own virtual Etch-A-Sketch identities. But the ubiquity of video technology has made this much, much harder to do. Videos have a way of reminding everyone who you are ? and were.
If he makes it to the general election, Mitt won?t be able to hide his primary self.
